"Education for our children
needs to accommodate a child’s thirst for understanding while
developing
underlying individual cognitive capacity."
This combination
can be challenging because we each have a unique style for learning. While
our brains are technically physically similar, the way we each shape the
growth of neuron-based connections (our dendrites) determines what
pathways-of-understanding and competencies we build. Hence, in each of us
there are natural strengths and weaknesses. Both strengths and
weaknesses need to be directly attended-to during the education process with
strengths developed further and weaknesses strengthened.
The
basis of this approach is an understanding of the human brain, its
functions and, its dysfunctions. The unique school setting of Wasdell Centre for Innovative Learning provides a
direct response to both sets of needs for each individual.
Wasdell is a private school
that focuses on developing each child to the best of their potential.
Wasdell works towards Building
Human Potential.
We all have gifts and we all have challenges. Both
are addressed at Wasdell. Our children
range from the very gifted to average to those with some
exceptionalities. Ages range from age 4 to 17 right now and we have
applied to offer high school grades as well. Our current class sizes
range from 5 to 15 depending on the program.
Each child is tested when they join so that we can see
where the gifts, average abilities, and challenges are.
We then create a program that includes both academics
and brain-based exercises prioritized and based on needs determined by the
test results. This program is discussed and agreed-to with parents.
Each student receives their own daily schedule and they
rotate through classes and teachers specialized in their academic subjects.
We carefully track the progress of each student with
year end testing. This testing measures progress and determines the
next year's plan.
Attached are the stories of several of our students,
each representing the different backgrounds of students at our school. All the students have made solid progress
in underlying cognitive skills that support their academic growth. They are our
Faces
of the Future
and we are very proud to be part of their
path towards success in their lives.
